A gentler wash day for blonde hair

Blonde hair feeling rough or catching on the comb? Lightening can contribute to dryness and brittleness, while heat and handling also matter. Naturally blonde hair can also benefit from careful handling, especially when you style it with heat. A gentler wash-day routine is a useful place to start.

1. Wash for your scalp

There is no ideal washing schedule for every blonde. Let oil, dirt and your hair texture guide you. Massage shampoo into the scalp and let the lather rinse through the lengths. Avoid scrubbing or tangling the ends.

2. Condition the lengths

Use rinse-out conditioner after shampooing. Fine or straight hair usually needs it mainly on the ends; dry or curly hair may benefit through more of the length. Follow the label for amount, timing and rinsing.

3. Take your time with tangles

Use a wide-tooth comb gently. Let straight hair dry a little first; textured hair and tight curls are generally best combed while damp. Pause at knots rather than pulling through them.

4. Choose a suitable leave-in

Dry, colour-treated or frequently heat-styled hair may benefit from a leave-in. Start with a small amount on damp lengths and ends; fine hair often needs a lighter formula. Use a leave-in product rather than leaving rinse-out conditioner in. Check the label for heat protection.

5. Dry with a lighter touch

Absorb water with a towel without vigorous rubbing. Air-dry when practical. If using heated tools, choose a low setting and reduce how often you use them. Start with one change you can repeat comfortably.

Make it personal

Tell Rebecca what feels difficult at your next Ecovie appointment in Manly, so the conversation can focus on your routine. If breakage persists despite gentler care, or you notice thinning, seek advice from a dermatologist.
