Blend Your Greys or Cover Them? Choosing a Softer Grow-Out

Brunette portrait with softly scattered silver strands

A few silver strands at your temples can lead to a surprisingly big question: do you want them covered, softened or simply left alone?

Before choosing a colour service, think about the result you want to live with between appointments. Your preferred amount of grey, your existing colour and the time you can realistically spend in the salon all belong in that conversation.

Start with how much grey you want to see

Full coverage aims to conceal grey hair and create a more even colour. Grey blending takes a softer approach, using colour placement or a more translucent result to make grey strands feel part of the overall look.

Blending may involve highlights, lowlights or other colour work chosen for your hair. It can soften the contrast as new hair grows through, although some grey will remain visible.

A useful starting sentence is: “I’m happy to see some silver, but I’d like it to feel more connected to the rest of my colour.” Or, just as clearly: “I prefer my greys covered.”

Think about the roots, not only the ends

An inspiration photograph might show beautiful blonde lengths while telling you very little about the roots.

Look closely at the parting, temples and hairline. Do you like a darker root? A scattering of silver? A more uniform colour?

Bring photographs that show those details, ideally in ordinary daylight. Explain what you like about each one rather than asking for the whole photograph to be copied.

Blending does not have to mean becoming blonde

Highlights and lowlights can help bring grey into a more dimensional colour. The approach depends on the contrast you already have and the finish you want.

If you love being brunette, say so. If you want to keep brightness around your face, mention that too. You do not need to arrive with a technique chosen.

Make the maintenance conversation specific

Instead of asking only, “Is this low maintenance?”, ask:

  • What will my parting look like as it grows?

  • How much grey will still show?

  • What might I need refreshed between larger appointments?

  • Could we work towards this gradually?

  • What would you suggest if I want fewer colour visits?

Share your previous colouring history, including home colour. Agree on a realistic plan before deciding on the service.
